## Description

- PL: Modele łączące podmodele mechanistyczne (np. bilanse masy i energii) z komponentami nieparametrycznymi uczonymi z danych, w układzie szeregowym lub równoległym.
- EN: Models that couple mechanistic submodels (e.g. mass and energy balances) with nonparametric data-driven components, in serial or parallel arrangements.

## In one sentence

- EN: A model of a machine or process that combines known laws of physics with a network learned from measurements where the formulas run out.

## Problem it solves

- EN: Equations alone never describe a real plant fully, and a model learned only from data goes wrong once conditions leave the range it has seen.

## What it does

- EN: Like a mechanic who knows the engine manual but adds margin notes from years of watching one particular machine.

## Everyday example

- PL: W browarze model fermentacji liczy ubytek cukru ze wzorów, a tempo pracy drożdży w danej partii podpowiada mu część wyuczona na danych.
- EN: At a brewery the fermentation model works out sugar use from formulas, while a part learned from data supplies how fast this batch's yeast is working.

## This concerns you if you…

- EN: have process equations that do not match your measurements
- EN: have little data and do not trust machine learning alone
- EN: are building a digital twin of a plant

## How it works

- EN: First-principles equations set the model structure, while a neural network or other regressor learns poorly known terms such as reaction rates. In a parallel arrangement the learned part corrects the physical model's residual. Another variant adds physical laws as a penalty in the loss function.

## Limits

- EN: A hybrid is not automatically better: it depends on a sensible integration of knowledge and on parameter identifiability. The learned part still extrapolates poorly outside the data range. Building one needs both a process engineer and a data specialist.

## Key terms

- PL: **grey-box**: Model częściowo z równań, częściowo wyuczony z danych.
- PL: **model mechanistyczny**: Model zbudowany z praw fizyki i chemii, nie z danych.
- PL: **identyfikowalność**: Czy z dostępnych pomiarów da się jednoznacznie ustalić parametry modelu.
- EN: **grey-box**: A model partly built from equations, partly learned from data.
- EN: **mechanistic model**: A model built from laws of physics and chemistry, not from data.
- EN: **identifiability**: Whether the available measurements pin down the model's parameters uniquely.
