## Description

- EN: Estimating an effect from the discontinuity in outcomes at a threshold of the running variable that fully or partly determines treatment.

## In one sentence

- EN: You compare people just above and just below a cut-off that decides something, such as getting a scholarship.

## Problem it solves

- EN: People who received something usually differ from the rest, so you cannot tell whether the reward or their traits caused better results.

## What it does

- EN: Right at the cut-off people differ by a hair, so the decision acts almost like a lottery; a jump in outcomes there reveals the effect.

## Everyday example

- PL: Stypendium dostają uczniowie z co najmniej 80 punktami. Porównujesz dalsze losy tych, którzy mieli 79 i 81 punktów.
- EN: Students with at least 80 points get a scholarship. You compare what later happens to those who scored 79 and 81.

## This concerns you if you…

- PL: o czymś decyduje próg punktów, wieku lub dochodu
- PL: oceniasz program z jasnym kryterium przyznania
- EN: a threshold of points, age or income decides something
- EN: evaluate a programme with a clear eligibility rule

## How it works

- EN: Assuming potential outcomes are continuous at the threshold, the jump in outcomes identifies the effect. Local linear regressions are fitted on each side with a triangular kernel and chosen bandwidth. In a sharp design treatment switches from 0 to 1; in a fuzzy design the probability jumps partly and the threshold acts as an instrument.

## Limits

- EN: The effect applies only near the threshold. If people can sort across it, the comparison breaks, so the running variable's density is checked. Results depend on bandwidth and functional form, and many observations near the cut-off are needed.

## Key terms

- EN: **running variable**: The quantity with a cut-off, such as a test score or age.
- EN: **bandwidth**: How far from the cut-off observations are used.
- EN: **fuzzy RDD**: The cut-off changes only the chance of treatment, not treatment itself.
